    President's Message
    Doreen

    Greetings Fellow Akron Chapter Members:

We will be kicking off our 70th year with Don Robart, Mayor of Cuyahoga Falls, speaking at the Technical Session on 'Redevelopment: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly'. Chris Burnham, President & Executive Director of Summit County Port Authority will speak at the Pre-Tech session on 'Port Authority Economic Development Financing.' I hope you plan on attending our kickoff meeting.

Hate to stand in line to pay for dinner? We again are offering the option to pre-register and save $2.00 on the price of your meal. All you need to do is sign in. Pre-tech sessions prices have not risen either. Cost is $50 for all or you can pay $10 for each session. This is a real value if you need CPE.

Mark your calendars for Friday, December 7th. We will be offering 7 hours of CPE at our Professional Development Seminar.

The program booklets are complete and at our printer. You will be receiving them shortly. Thanks to four people who were able to pull it all together: Jeff Falter who got our speaker slate completed, Mike Savage, who sold the advertisements, Gary Floyd, who linked the advertiser's website to the Chapter's website, and Ken Bechtol, who coordinated the project and got everything to the printer.

    See you on September 19th!

    Doreen Kuster

    DON L. ROBART
    Mayor of Cuyahoga Falls

Mayor Robart entered the US Marine Corps at Parris Island on 15 October 1965 and graduated on 15 December of the same year.

Upon completion of A.I.T. (Advanced Infantry Training) at Camp Lejeune, Mayor Robart joined the Active Reserve Organization at "K" Company, Third Battalion on Dan Street where he was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal in 1971.

    Multitasking 101

Accountants often juggle multiple assignments at the same time. And while there are certainly instances when multitasking helps you achieve more, you shouldn't automatically assume you are more productive when you try to do everything at once. Working on too many tasks simultaneously can actually diminish both the quantity and quality of your output. Put simply, some endeavors require your undivided attention. Following are multitasking tips that will enhance - not hinder - your productivity:

Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. Multitasking mishaps occur when you constantly shuffle priorities, bouncing from one task to another to another. And in the end, none of the projects receive the time and attention they deserve. Boost your productivity by using a tickler file, an erasable whiteboard or some other tool to list and organize your most-pressing demands. Maintain your focus by reviewing the list periodically throughout the day.

Give yourself some peace and quiet. Overall, it's important to be an accessible team player. But you can't say yes every time someone makes a request of you. When you're under a tight deadline or reviewing a critical report, consider letting calls go to voicemail and hanging a "Do Not Disturb" sign outside your workspace to minimize interruptions.

Use technology to your advantage. Invest in equipment that promotes efficiency. A telephone headset, for example, allows you to take notes while listening to a conference call. Use a recording device to dictate reminders or inspired ideas as they occur to you. While you can't always stop your mind from thinking about items unrelated to the job at hand, you can record your thoughts and go back to them later. Keep in mind, however, that technology can be a tremendous distraction, too. Be disciplined and turn off your electronic devices when they distract you from the critical project you're addressing.

Know when not to multitask. Few actions are more disruptive than pecking at your laptop or answering a call in the middle of a group conversation. In short, don't multitask in meetings. It's bad etiquette and can damage your relationship with colleagues who feel disrespected by your lack of courtesy and involvement.

Ineffective multitasking reduces concentration and increases errors.

Smart, strategic and structured multitasking, however, can help management accountants complete projects swiftly and effectively.

    Classroom Leader Search

The IMA Akron Chapter is putting together a Teaching Team for the upcoming CMA Review Program starting at the University of Akron in September 2007.
The team will be led by Wendy Tietz, CMA/CPA - Department of Accounting Kent St. University and IMA Akron Chapter Board Member (Director of Student Relations) which allows us to invite interested individuals who do not currently have the CMA designation to join the teaching team.
With the start of the Fall semester quickly approaching, we are actively searcing for those of you who are interested to join the team! The program is administered by the University of Akron Workplace Development and Continuing Education Division. It will utilize the New Version 2.0 release of the CMA Learning System launched by IMA National in June, which includes a completely enhanced and improved Instructor preparation package. The Teaching Team is a new concept being implemented this year to provide support and assistance to the classroom team as well as reducing the burden and commitment on the individual classroom instructors to provide the participants with the resources they need to pass the exam successfully on the first attempt.
