    President's Message
    Dean

    Dear Fellow Akron Chapter Members,

It is hard to believe October is already upon us. The October dinner meeting is our annual opportunity to honor the accomplishments of your fellow members. In addition to the awards we have two wonderful speakers lined up for you, Dr. Norm Meonske and Dr. Raj Aggarwal.

Jack Brillhart is the winner of the Associate Director of the Year award. Jack’s continued presence at the meetings, greeting everyone in attendance with a friendly hello and a warm smile, makes for a wonderful start to our events. Jack is also celebrating his 36th year of perfect attendance. That is truly an amazing feat.

Steve Law has been named Member of the year. Steve’s dedication and hard work on the CMA review program have begun to yield positive results. Even those in the program have little idea how much time Steve has spent on coordinating classes and negotiating different terms and packages for the program. Steve has had to work with a number of different entities to bring to the membership the past and current study opportunities available (page 24 of the chapter program book).

The IMA and Robert Half International named Ron Riebe the 2006 Financial Executive of the Year. This is an incredible accomplishment. Ron is a past president and a current board member of the chapter. Ron continues to split his time between family, work, IMA and his other numerous outside interests. It should be noted that the official presentation of this award will be at a time and place, which has yet to be determined.

Please join the Board and I in congratulating not only the three members mentioned above but also all of the 2005-06 honorees. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting.

If there are any members who wish to participate more in the chapter, we are looking for volunteers to join some of our committees. Anyone interested in helping out please contact me to discuss the possibilities. One more date of note, the National Student Leadership conference is being held in Cleveland from November 9th through the 11th. There will be a number of events for all members to take part in during the conference

    Sincerely, Dean C. Hull II
    President

    Norman R, Meonske, Ph.D
    Professor of Accounting

    Kent State University
"From Numbers to Ethical Behavior - Can We Do it in Corporate America?"

Dr. Norman Meonske, Professor of Accounting at Kent State University, has conducted many continuing professional education presentations for state CPA societies, corporations, CPA firms, IMA meetings, and other professional organizations. He is the 2004 recipient of the prestigious R. Lee Brummert Award (IMA national professor of the year) and the Ohio Council IMA’s distinguished service award for his contributions to the Ohio Council IMA professional activities. His public accounting experience was with Arthur Andersen & Co. He is the senior faculty instructor for the online Becker CPA review course.

Norm founded and has been associated for 32 years with the annual April IMA Ohio Council Professional Development Conference at Kent State University, starting in 1974 with the spot-on topic of the day, the new ERISA law. In January 2004, Ohio Council IMA renamed its annual conference in honor of Dr. Meonske – “the 30th Annual Meonske Professional Development Conference”. Naming the conference recognizes Dr. Meonske’s “outstanding contributions to the field of management accounting education through his 30 years of continuous meritorious service as the program chairman and numerous leadership positions at the IMA chapter, council and national level. Through his vision, leadership, dedication and hard work, the annual Ohio Council PD Conference has become recognized as providing attendees an opportunity to learn the latest accounting, financial reporting, and management methods”.

In a newspaper review of the KSU Conference, Kent Record-Courier publisher David Dix said “Norm’s outgoing personality goes contrary to my rudimentary and probably inaccurate image of accountants as being a bunch of introverts. If I’d met an accounting professor like him at a younger age, I would’ve studied a lot more accounting and ended up much better at the business side of publishing than I am”. Dr. Meonske has a distinguished record of scholarship in his writing and seminar presentations, and has authored a number of journal articles which offer practical advice. Dr. Meonske received his BSBA and MS degrees from Wichita State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He and his wife, Phyllis, live in Rootstown and are the parents of three adult children.

He has consulted for the SEC, the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the United Nations, the World Bank, foreign companies and governments, and numerous local companies.

He currently is a member of the corporate boards at Manco Inc., Flood Co., Ancora Mutual Funds, and the nonprofit boards at Financial Executives Research Foundation, Hawken School, Cleveland Council on World Affairs, Consortium of International Programs, and the BPM Forum.

Aggarwal’s honors and awards include a Fulbright Research Fellowship, the Larosiere Award for Best Essays in Global Finance from the World Bank, Fellow of the Academy of International Business, and numerous university faculty and teaching awards. He has been interviewed for national and local magazine and newspaper articles, and TV and radio news programs.

Aggarwal earned a BS degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an MBA and doctorate in corporate finance and international business from KSU. An author of 12 books and more than 50 scholarly papers, he has served in various leadership capacities in academic, business and civic associations, national peer review panels and editorial boards. Dr. Aggarwal – who has lived and worked in Japan, Singapore, India, Australia, Ireland and Sweden – and his wife Karen have a daughter (Sonia) and live on the east side of Cleveland. College Recruiting: Start Now!

Competition for skilled accounting professionals remains intense. Demographic shifts in the workplace, business growth opportunities and compliance-driven initiatives are all contributing to a strong need for talent, including entry-level professionals. This environment is prompting many organizations to focus their recruiting efforts on colleges and universities in order to secure top students before they graduate.

Executives polled in a recent Accountemps survey were asked, “Is your firm more active or less active in recruiting entry-level candidates from colleges now than it was five years ago?” Forty-one percent of respondents said their firms are more active. Only 13 percent reported slowing their college recruiting efforts.

In addition to the overall heightened demand for accounting professionals, perhaps another reason explaining more aggressive college recruitment is that graduates are better prepared than they used to be and can now make more immediate contributions. In another Accountemps survey, CFOs were asked, “In your opinion, how prepared are today’s accounting graduates for careers in accounting and finance compared to 10 years ago?” Seventy-one percent said today’s accounting graduates are equally or more prepared.

Amid the intense competition for entry-level talent, how can organizations successfully recruit top candidates from the college ranks? Here’s some advice:

    • Make the commitment. Because so many companies are beginning to participate in college recruiting functions, those who reap the most benefits commit to a year-long program and devote sufficient resources to ensure the success of their programs. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until graduation time to get involved. Most of the top talent will already have offers in hand by this time.
    • Become a resource. Build awareness for your company as a source of both industry information and career opportunities. For example, offer to speak during student accounting organization meetings and accounting classes.
    • Lay the foundation. During recruiting events, discuss the specific types of roles and responsibilities entry-level professionals will have at your firm. Provide details about ongoing professional development opportunities and various career path options within your organization.

Accountemps is the world’s first and largest temporary staffing service specializing in the placement of accounting, finance and bookkeeping professionals. The company has more than 350 offices throughout North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and offers online job search services at www.accountemps.com.

Venue Change for Pilliod Lecture Series

Page 28 of your Annual Program Books describes the Goodyear Pilliod Lecture Series at KSU. We have just been advised that the venue for the November 14 lecture (Bill Oliver, Senior Vice President- Communications at AT&T, speaking on "Internet Neutrality") has been changed from the KSU Student Center Ballroom to the Auditorium (Cartwright Hall - which faces Hilltop Drive - The parking lot is off Terrace Drive). They advise parking at the Student Center and walking along the Esplanade, which goes directly into the Auditorium parking lot.
