    President's Message
    Doreen

    Greetings Fellow Akron Chapter Members:

As the weather starts to cool, the leaves begin to change colors, and daylight hours become less, it must be October. This month, Ron Finklestein, President of AKRIS, will be speaking at the Technical Session on Seven Secrets to Business Success and Steven Shechter and William Martz from Evans Insurance Agency will be speaking at the Pre- Technical Session on Workers' Compensation Cost Containment.

October is also Award's Night. A big congratulations goes out to Dean Hull and his Board last year for getting 11th place Stevenson Award along with the 3 year Net Membership Retention Achievement Award. We will also be awarding the Member of the Year, Associate Director of the Year, Perfect Attendance milestones, and the 25 and 50 year Membership Awards.

I hope you attended last month's meeting to hear Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart speak about economic development in his city. He provided some interesting history about the State Road Shopping Center and the Front Street Area and the future plans for each. Chris Burnham, President and Executive Director of the Summit County Port Authority spoke in a casual setting describing financing through the Port Authority and how recent projects have affected our community.

The CMA Review will begin Module 2, CMA Management Accounting & Reporting, on November 3rd. If you are unsure how the CMA can improve your career, ask any Board member with a white CMA ribbon, or ask Steve Law, our Director of CMA Programs. More information is available on our website, www.akron.imanet.org.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for Friday, December 7th for the Professional Development Seminar. You will be able to earn 7 hours of CPE, which includes 2 hours of Ethics. This is an excellent opportunity to get quality CPE at a modest cost. Flyers will be available at the meeting.

Congratulations to Sue Arnold, who accepted the duties of Director, Technical & Board Meetings, Facilitator & Attendance. This is her first year on the board and I'm sure she'll serve the membership well.
I hope to see everyone on Wednesday, October 17th at Tangiers. Happy Fall!

    Doreen Kuster

Showing Respect for Employees in Small Ways

When it comes to keeping your team motivated and happy, sometimes the little things matter the most. Many leaders intuitively know this and do show that they respect and appreciate their staff members on a regular basis. On the other hand, managers sometimes inadvertently lower morale in subtle ways.

Consider the time-crunched supervisor who cuts off a team member during a meeting. Then there's the multitasking boss who doesn't give her full attention to an employee seeking guidance on a project. Or the boss who keeps forgetting to include a particular team member on group e-mails. While these indirect offenses may seem minor, they could cause employees to question how much you value them. Over time, these bitter feelings can deflate a person's confidence, loyalty, and productivity -ultimately damaging your retention efforts. By remaining attuned to your actions and how they affect employee job satisfaction, you can improve the work environment for everyone. Here are a few tips:

    • Talk it out. Although a matter may seem inconsequential to you, if a perceived "snub" is troubling to someone on your staff, it's important to address the issue before the problem festers.
    • Praise the right people. Ensure that you're assigning credit to the most-deserving individuals if you intend to call out specific team members for a job well done. Otherwise, your well-meaning gesture can easily turn into a slight.
    • Own up to your mistakes. If an overwhelming to- do list or pressing deadlines cause you to be brusque or inattentive, apologize to any employee you may have upset.
    • Build rapport. Get to know your staff members as people. Without prying, make an effort to discuss interests or hobbies you share in common.
    • Keep staff in the loop. If you solicit employees' suggestions, be sure to act on them or explain why you can't implement their ideas. Also, if a team member asks for support or feedback, respond promptly. At the very least, acknowledge the request and give a time frame for your reply.

No manager is perfect and unintentional slights are bound to happen from time to time. The key is to make amends quickly and reassure the offended party that you truly appreciate their hard work, dedication and expertise.
